Taking small children to Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Who knew Battle Droids were so funny?)
All the negative reviews of this movie really make me wonder what people were expecting. Oscar-worthy? Nope. Watchable if you're over age 10 and didn't bring kids to the theater with you? No way. But if you take your young kids (I suspect boys will like it better than girls, but I don't have any girls so I can't say for sure) who love Star Wars, then you'll have a blast!

We took Henry (6.5), Eddie (5.75) and Charlie (3.75) and they all LOVED it. To tell you the truth, if Charlie were my only child there's no way I would have brought him at this age, but with two older brothers so close in age he's already been exposed to this kind of stuff — you should see him play Lego Star Wars on our Nintendo DS… He's better than I am.

So while I'm on the fence about letting the boys watch the first real Star Wars (I think that one is Episode IV) because of the live-action violence and real scary nature of the film, I had no problem with them seeing Clone wars. No one got scared, and they were entranced the entire movie. I can't remember the last time that happened.

In fact, in the middle of the movie, Charlie leaned over, gave me a big hug, and said "Mommy! This is a wonderful movie!" I think that's the best review you're going to get. We may go again later in the week!

I'm so happy to read this. I'm planning on taking my guys this weekend. I think they're going to LOVE it!

I thought it was really a lot of fun, and even during the parts I kind of tuned out from boredom, I was happy because the boys were having SO MUCH FUN. I hope you have a good time too :)
I'm glad to here it. We're taking the boys to see it this weekend. They have seen the original trilogy & they were not frightened or upset by it. I think it will be awhile before i let them see the second trilogy though.
I hope to get out and see it with my girls. :)

My kids have seen episodes 4, 5 & 6 many times. There's no "shown" violence in #4 that I can think of. there's an awful lot of story and action and they like that one. They also like #6 for reasons I can't explain (okay, it's the Ewoks). #5 they could take or leave but they like parts of it. We talked about what happens to Luke when he battles Vader in the cloud city and when they play "lightsaber," they tend to aim for the hand.
As for #1, #2 & #3, we don't watch #3 all the way through. The kids like #1 for reasons I can't explain (okay, Jar-Jar). #2 is a little too much confusion of story for them to follow and #3 is a little too dark for them to get into it and since I don't let them watch the scene on Mustafar, they don't like that one b/c it's incomplete. But of all 6 SW films, I would most allow them to watch #4 (#6 has laser blasts, speeder bike crashes, etc.).
Besides #4 is, at its core, about good triumphing over evil and the value of friendship. Think of it that way ;)
Eden, I think I probably agree with you, but I haven't re-watched any of the original movies since I've had kids. I ordered #4 yesterday for Craig and I to watch first, and I suspect I'll end up letting the kids see it. It will blow their minds!
I agree about the core of #4 — and that's what I liked about Clone Wars too. Certainly not a great movie, but there was no violence just for the sake of it. It was all about good and evil.
Erika thank you for your review. I haven't taken my kids to see it yet because all I keep hearing are horrible reviews. I have a 10 year old boy, 5 year old boy, and 4 year old girl who acts like a boy (LOL). From the way your boys reacted, I'm saying I might change my mind and take them!!

Mrs. S, it all depends on your expectations. If I had, for example, chosen this movie for a date night with just me and Craig I would have hated it. But my kids LOVED it and that was enough for me.
My only caution is to take them somewhere afterwards where they can run around like maniacs for a few hours. We took them to a 3pm show and they were up way past their bedtime with excitement. I think we're going to go again tomorrow, but see an 11am show and then go to a park!
So glad you liked it!
Did you know that this movie is kind of like the jumping board for the animated star wars clone wars tv show on Cartoon Network? It should be out in September if I'm not mistaken (can you guess where I work- wink wink)

Maya, yes I figured as much. My kids don't watch that network because it has commercials and I'm a fuddy duddy, but after it's out on DVD we'll probably get it.
I'm so glad you wrote this. We were planning on taking Aidan, he's 7 but debating over Riley (age 3).
Now I know he will probably love it too.
Thanks!

I have to say I'm glad to have read this. I've been wondering if The Clone Wars would be appropriate to get my four-year-old son, Isaac, for Christmas. He's the oldest child, but we've shown him parts of Episode IV (skipping through the rougher scenes) and he LOVES it. I thought it would be nice for him to have something that didn't need constant editing on our part.

Holy crap.
Oh Christina, there's no shame at all. And good for you for deciding to fight for your marriage.
OK, we're all meeting Laura at pickup today and we're going to kick ass and take names.
Amen.
Loralee is at the hospital with a major kidney infection. Hustle over and tell her something funny.
Perfect! I couldn't have said it better myself.
YAY Simone!!
Sounds heavenly, but I'm left wondering what in the world is a "Teutonic spank?"
