I am completely, utterly, and profoundly relieved

Tuesday, 28 August 2007 Comments »

After a morning of nearly dropping my son off in the wrong kindergarten class and almost handing in an enormous pile of Very Important Forms to Completely the Wrong Person, Mike got to have his first day of kindergarten.

day1.jpgDo you remember how he was on the wait list for our local public school? That really pissed me off all summer, but finally on August 9th we heard that he got in. The next question was who would his teacher be, but I wasn't particularly concerned about that since I didn't know any of the teachers in the first place. It was actually really great to be able to just let that question go!

Last week he got his teacher assignment, but it meant nothing to me except reinforcing the fact that he was really going to be able to start kindergarten at our local school.

But then last week I was waiting in line at the school to turn in yet more forms and ran into some folks who live around here, but who I only know online. And of course, leave it to me to meet them by making a smartass remark to a stranger! That's how I finally met Jill Asher and Pamela Hornik in person. Yes, they are as nice in person as they appear online, and I love it when things work out like that.

They asked which class Mike was going to be in, and when I told them they both said such great things about his new teacher! In fact, anyone who heard who his teacher was going to be just went on and on about how great she was and how she is the teacher everyone hopes their child gets.

And I was relieved. I had been so worried. Mike is a tricky kid and he needs someone who is prepared for that. Someone who isn't going to look at him like he's trouble, but instead will have already met several other kids just like him. Someone who already has relevant strategies in her bag of tricks. Someone just like his new teacher.

What I didn't know what just how much I had been worried about who his teacher would be, because on the way home I just started to cry. It was as if a huge weight had been lifted from me and I could finally relax and just let the school year start.

This morning Mike was excited and a little nervous, but he marched through the door and didn't even look back. I predict that he has a great time. He's ready and he deserves it.

Glad everything worked out for you. I know first hand how nerve wracking that first day of kindergarten can be…for the parents, that is. I cried too when my oldest started. At our school they give out these little kleenexes with a sweet poem attached for all the parents dropping their kids off for first day of kindergarten.

    Looking forward to Mike's update!

Yea! I'm so glad it went well for Mike (and you.) How cool that you got to meet some local bloggers, too.

That is good news. I do have to say I don't think you've been yourself this summer. Maybe this was it.

We start Kindergarten next week. So far so good. We'll see if he decides to actually go on the day of.

Listen, I'm so happy for you and Mike, but I can't really process it, because everyone time you say "wait list" and "local public school" in the same sentence, my brain shuts down and starts spinning. Glad that particular saga is in the past! Happy First Day!

YEAH!!!! Congrats there Mom on having an official kindergarten kid! That's fab news about the teacher as well. We had the same experience last year, having just moved I knew nothing about any of the teachers but when we got the assignment everyone raved about Drama Queens teacher and she was fabulous! The perfect teacher for an uprooted, dramatic, talkative 8 year old!

    Yay for awesome teachers!!!

    Good luck!

Glad to hear you got the good teacher. Does he like her and how did the first day go? So far my daughters like their teachers except I wasn't thrilled to learn that the 9 year olds' teacher is pregnant and due in February. I'm all happy for her but that means a new teacher in January and you get to start all over again.

I'm glad it went well, it gives me hope! Tilly doesn't start until next week, I feel like we must have the latest starting school in the US of A, but that's good, because I can calm my own anxiety with the stories of others.
